The spirit of service to others is evident on the Concordia campus. The moment students heard reports of the tragic events in Haiti, they responded. As a result, February became Share the Love for the children of Haiti month. Under the leadership of the Community Service Team, a newly formed group of students representing virtually all twenty campus clubs and organizations, Concordia students banded together to plan and implement events and activities in support of Haiti.
The month began with a very successful food and clothing drive involving faculty, staff, and students as well as members of the surrounding community. Ronny Romm, a well-known hypnotist on the college circuit was the featured entertainment for the Share the Love Benefit fundraising event February 18 in the Sommer Center. Mr. Romm has become a campus favorite since he performed at Fall Orientation. Because of his connection to Concordia and his dedication to the cause in Haiti, Romm did not charge a performance fee. This event brought together the campus community for an unforgettable night. Twenty students were randomly selected from the audience and were hypnotized by Mr. Romm. The Social Work and Cheerleading clubs competed to see how many tickets each organization could sell. In fact, the Social Work Club offered ticket buyers a bonus of sending three Valentine’s Day candy grams to loved ones on campus for each ticket purchased. Students contributed $5 and faculty, staff, and community members donated $10 in return for admission to the event. As of the end of February, these events have raised $700, which is being matched, dollar-for-dollar, by an anonymous donor, bringing the total to $1,400 for Haitian relief efforts.
The “love” for the people of Haiti will continue as the Concordia Festival Choir dedicates its spring concert on Sunday, March 21 to Save the Children. Proceeds from the Share the Love Benefit, the Theta Zeta Upsilon Winter Ball, Social Work Club’s Heart to Heart Valentine’s candy grams, and the Festival Choir Concert will all benefit Save the Children’s efforts in Haiti. Last October, the Community Service Team decided to adopt the Save the Children organization as the charity they wished to support. Working closely with the Westchester Volunteer Council for Save the Children, the Team launched its efforts this past November by hosting the Survive to Five Bingo Benefit. This event featured an evening of bingo with prizes from local vendors. The proceeds helped fight pneumonia, one of the leading causes of death for children under five.
