Krenz Academic Center Honored as One of the Nation’s Most Outstanding Learning Environments

The Donald A. Krenz Academic Center at Concordia College was selected for publication in American School & University magazine’s 2009 Educational Interiors Showcase, cited for recognition as outstanding exhibition and educational space. It was featured in the August 2009 issue of the magazine, spotlighting projects representing some of the most effective learning environments in America.

The 12,000 square foot addition to the Scheele Memorial Library’s second floor, completed in August 2006, was designed by Peter Gisolfi Associates of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. A highlight of The Krenz Academic Center is the OSilas Art Gallery, which features blond hardwood floors and a north-facing glass façade that is transparent so activity within is visible from the College’s campus. The linear space along the north of the Gallery displays smaller works of art; while larger pieces are mounted or displayed in the spacious interior. Since its opening in the fall of 2006, OSilas Gallery exhibitions, workshops, concerts, and lectures have attracted thousands of visitor’s to Concordia’s campus.

The Krenz Center also includes the Pietruski Auditorium, an 85-seat lecture hall with concentric rows of terraced seating. It supports the use of a variety of media and accommodates laptop use at each seat location. In addition, the Center is home to the Darlene Hedin Krenz New Media Center, which features a fully-equipped production studio and post-production computer lab for digital media, centerpieces of Concordia’s New Media area of studies.

The Krenz Center also houses the Yeager Collection Room, a formal wood-paneled meeting and conference room in which is housed The Yeager Collection, a unique exhibit of letters and signed documents of significant American wealth-generators, the largest public display of its kind. This space, too, has attracted numerous individual and group visitors to the campus.

A computer instruction classroom and student lounge complete the space. Wireless internet is available throughout the building. This award-winning building has been a source of great pride for the College and our alumni and has been enthusiastically received by the student body.
