This past fall, senior Anthony Carnacchio and junior Alexa Rosella participated in paid internships with the children of The Chapel School. They were chosen from the Social Sciences program based on their academic merit as well as their ability to interact with children in a therapeutic setting.
Under the direction of Betty Geiling, Director of Counseling, the Concordia College students developed and implemented a discussion group that focused on improving social skills and empathy in young children. The group was introduced at The Chapel School as “Breakfast Bunches” and quickly developed a waiting list for interested children.
Each week the children were presented with tasks and challenges that encouraged team work, collaborative learning, and inclusive behavior. The children were encouraged to listen to each other as well as share their own ideas. At the end of the session, each group presented to the rest of the children. The children then described what difficulties they encountered working together and what successes occurred.
Anthony and Alexa facilitated the group by stimulating conversation and guiding the children through a reflection process. They found this to be a valuable experience in terms of career exploration and application and the children of The Chapel School benefitted greatly from their expertise, creativity, and patience.
