Career Center Works to Empower Students' Employment

These days, everyone is talking about jobs, and rightly so. At Concordia College, students are not only talking about jobs, but are actively planning for and pursuing professional success. The Career Development Center capitalizes on the College’s experiential curriculum design whereby standards for the professional life are incorporated into academic pursuits through workshops, mentoring and advocacy programs, and opportunities in the workforce. Individualized professional goal development, résumé writing, and portfolio creation begin with a student’s admission to the College and continue beyond commencement.  The Career Development Center promotes venues for exploration that foster requisite skills for today’s global workforce.

“Students’ vocational development incorporates enterprising experiences, professionals in the community, and the efforts of the individual along the journey. The Career Development Center promotes all career paths and forges connections as students internalize advice from seasoned professionals, transfer knowledge gained in the classroom to the workplace, and synthesize these lessons to achieve levels of significance in the world,” identifies Johanna Perry (’00) who directs the Career Development Center for the College.

Career counseling is utilized by students and graduates alike. Workshops focus on the critical preparations necessary from networking and interviewing skills to résumé and cover letter writing. Financial Planning after College and Smart Investing Workshops are led by members of the College’s senior administrative staff to help promote responsible approaches to one’s finances during and after college. President George spoke about effective conversation strategies at this year’s Etiquette Dinner. Practice graduate school entrance and nursing licensure exams and seminars are offered.

Looking ahead, the Concordia College Career Fair, scheduled for March 16, is an afternoon designed to host organizations for a dynamic opportunity to meet with Concordia students and share opportunities for careers, internships, summer and part-time employment, non-profit and volunteer work, mentorship, advocacy, experiential learning, and graduate school programs. There is still time for individuals or organizations to be involved and support Concordia students’ discovery and learning as participants at the Fair.
