One recent evening the International Students’ Club made dinner–a big one–at the home of Concordia College’s President. Two teams of student cooks took on Asian and Latin American fusion themes. Mounds of rice, beans, plantains, chicken, and beef were fashioned into various dishes for President Viji George and his wife Janet, several professors, and 60 students. No one left hungry, and the George’s graciously handed out containers to students so they could take the leftovers back to their dormitory rooms.
This was “breaking bread” on a grand scale! And as sharing a good meal is apt to facilitate, students from many cultures took another step toward understanding and appreciating their peers in this new, global society in which we live.
The membership of The International Students’ Club consists of students from dozens of countries: from China to Uruguay, from Nepal to Zimbabwe. Its purpose is to aid in the creation of an intellectually and culturally supportive community for the College’s diverse international student body. The Club helps integrate international students into all aspects of college life, participate in and contribute to Concordia College - New York’s high quality liberal arts education, and assists them in applying learning to their own lives and cultural contexts.
And, oh yes, International Students’ Club members like to have fun! Whether it’s an outing to an interesting neighborhood in New York City or a barbecue on campus, this is a group of young people who knows how to laugh and have a good time. And thanks to the hospitality of Viji and Janet George, they did just that!
