ICS Teacher of the Year
Joanne (Banu) Basile ’78 was honored as the first Teacher of the Year at the annual dinner dance for Immaculate Conception School (ICS) in Tuckahoe, NY. Joanne has been a teacher at ICS for 20 years and was hired upon her graduation from Concordia College. She currently teaches 2nd grade, but has experience from kindergarten to 8th grade. At the dinner, Joanne was praised…
“Where there are 2nd graders, you will find Joanne, usually with a flock around her. Where there is music playing for a school show, you will find Joanne performing with a smile on her face. Where there is school liturgy, you will find the joyous music coming from the choir loft as Joanne leads the congregation in song. She selflessly gives of herself and her talents for all those who ask, and willingly volunteers for numerous activities.”
Joanne considers her Concordia education to have prepared her well for her teaching commitment at ICS. At Concordia she developed the sense of mission and ministry which helps her go that extra mile as a teacher. One of the ways Joanne stays connected to Concordia is by serving as a Cooperating Teacher for student teachers from the College. This has been a rewarding experience and she is delighted to help these blossoming new teachers along their way. Joanne commented that “these days student teaching is a two-way street.” She has a Smart Board in her classroom and Concordia student teachers bring their latest applications…so Joanne learns from them, too!
Joanne obtained her Masters degree at the College of New Rochelle. She has three children and is an organist at her church in Mount Vernon.
